San Miguel with kids: better than the guidebooks admit

San Miguel gets filed under 'romantic colonial getaway,' and sure. But nobody tells you it's a spectacular family town.
The Jardín is the secret: every evening the whole town — abuelas, teenagers, toddlers, mariachis — converges on the square in front of the pink parroquia, and your kids just... join. Ours played tag with local kids nightly while we drank cafe de olla on a bench like we'd lived there for years.
Days: churros at breakfast, artisan workshops (the mask maker let both kids paint their own), the El Charco botanical garden for run-it-off mornings. La Milpa for lunch until the señora started our order on sight.
A week went fast. Direct-ish flights via León, walkable everything, and the town's kindness to children shamed every resort we've paid triple for.
