Positano without the August crowds

Positano in August is a beautiful place having a panic attack. Positano in late September is the town the postcards promise.
We did four nights for our tenth anniversary — a room with the classic view (book by February; this is not optional advice) — and settled into the town's real rhythm: swim in the morning, long lunch, the vertical hike to dinner that justifies the lunch.
The boat day to the smaller coves is worth whatever it costs that week. The beach clubs are half-empty, the water is still warm, and dinner reservations exist again.
Bring shoes for stairs and money for everything else. Some places are famous because they're marketed; Positano is famous because it looks like that.
