Porto: Lisbon prices called and they're jealous

Porto delivers a premium European city break at economy prices, and I've stopped keeping the secret.
Stay in Ribeira if you want the postcard — stacked technicolor houses over the Douro — or up in Cedofeita for local prices five minutes away. Cross the bridge to the port lodges in Gaia and do a tasting at the smaller houses; same view back at the city, half the tour-bus traffic.
Francesinhas are a commitment and you should make it once. Beyond that, dinner for two with wine kept landing between €40 and €55 at places that would cost triple in Lisbon, quadruple in Paris.
The Douro Valley day trip is the upgrade that makes it a four-night trip instead of three. Trains run upriver; the wine day tours are worth it for the not-driving alone.
